Micro$oft does not listen to its customers.
Why should Microsoft listen to customers anyway? If they give their customers
cheap crap, what are their customers going to do? Switch to another brand?
HA! Microsoft has a monopoly on practically all software for the PC. So
we (the customers) are at the mercy of Megasloth and must use whatever
software they think we should use.
In the beginning there was DOS, and it was good for nothing. But it came
practically free with any purchase of an IBM PC, so why bother purchasing
another operating system? Well, there were many features people could have
used, such as a usable GUI or built in compression, but Bill sat on his
butt until he was faced with competition, such as DR-DOS, or the Macintosh.
Windows Version 3
What the hell is this?!
At first it may look innocent enough, but try and use it and you will
realize what a total turd this thing is. Program manager, in short, was
an application oriented (as opposed to document oriented), limited, single
level, icon based menu that stunk. Looking under the hood, it is obvious
their design goal was to make something that was easy to write, not easy
to use.
Windows 95
Perhaps the one time they actually listened to users, Windows 95 was
actually a half way decent operating system (but only half way), with a
fairly decent user interface.
IE 4/ Windows 98
What the hell is this?!
OH DAMNIT!!! DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!! Bill
took away his halfway decent user interface and replaced it with this shit!
Somebody at Micro$oft thought "oh, we need an excuse to illegally bundle
our web browser with Windows so we can crush Netscape" and here is the
excuse. The hard drive viewed as a web page. THAT'S SO STUPID!!!! Sure,
some people may like that, but everybody I have talked to hates it.
Add / Remove IE
Here is a rather simple feature that everyone I know wants, businesses
require, 20 states are suing for, the DOJ demands, but Microsoft simply
refuses to put in Windows. I think this is the worst case of not listening
to customers in the entire world.
I HATE TAHOMA!
Which font would you rather use for your pull-down menus? Tahoma (left)
or MS Sans Serif (right)? If you picked MS Sans Serif be aware Microsoft
is going out of its way to prevent you from having your choice.
.
While you may select any other font in the display properties for pull
down menus, if you select MS Sans Serif MS Office and other recent MS applications
will automatically replace your selection with Tahoma. MS Office uses Tahoma
for its dialog and message boxes, in order to get special characters. There
is nothing that can be done about the fonts in the dialog boxes, but I
have found an easy way to get MS Sans Serif to display in the menus.
I took the MS Sans Serif font and edited it so the name is now "MS Sans
Surfh" (The H stands for hack, I had to keep the same number of letters
and I didn't want to change the name too much). Just drop it in the fonts
folder, and change any reference to MS Sans Serif to MS Sans Surfh in the
Appearance tab of the Display properties (remember to save your new scheme).
MS Office simply doesn't know it is supposed to replace MS Sans Surfh with
Tahoma.
Clippit, The stupid gay office ass istant
Ok, the idea of an assistant is not necessarily a bad one, but they
should have done a little more homework on what people find offensive and
intrusive. Also, many features in Office 97, such as "replace as you type"
and automatic capitalization can be a serious problem for users when they
are trying to type special codes or abbreviations.
Microsoft Java
It took a lawsuit to get Bill to fix his bad java in his already bad
browser. In this case the customers he was not listening to were developers
who would like to "design once, run anywhere".
Rich Text Format
In Word 97, Microsoft altered the industry standard Rich Text Format
so files saved by Word 97 could not be used in old help compilers. Goodness
knows how other apps will react when loading a Microsoft RTF document.
Save As Word 6.0/95
Initially Word 97 did not include any utility to save files in previous
versions of Word. Either this was a conspiracy to force everybody to convert
to Word 97, or they just didn't listen to what customers wanted.
Advertising
I was thinking about making a parody Windows 2001 screen full of advertisements,
but I don't think I can beat the real thing. This is a screenshot of Windows
95 with IE 4 and all of the $*@&!*# advertising Bill forces on the
users desktop.
Lets see.. 6 IE 4 ads, two MSN ads, two AOL ads, two AT&T ads,
three Compuserve ads, a MCI add, an MSNBC ad, a picture of Mickey FUCKING
mouse (Disney), a point cast ad, and a Warner Brothers add. Oh, and a Compaq
ad, but I think that was put there by Compaq because this happened to be
a Compaq Computer.
Point is, businesses do not want advertising on their computers. And
don't run that "well, it can be deleted" stuff by me. End users don't know
how to disable overactive desktop or delete folders or icons.
More advertising
IEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
What the hell gives with these "e" logos!?! Like, if you are suckered
in to download and installing IE 4 you still need to be reminded that you
are using IE 4? Do they want you to download another copy or just to remember
that your soul belongs to Bill Gates?
You can turn off Netscape's logo by hiding all of the toolbars. No such
luck with IE.
There are certainly many, many more examples of Microsoft not listening
to customers, however these are the ones that really bother me personally.
